Alan Bickers has some 20 years’ experience as a director of small/medium companies and crown enterprises associated with civil engineering, consulting services, building control, education, transportation, infrastructure, health services, housing construction, technical publications, property development, regulatory services, electricity generation and distribution, vehicle testing, horticulture and water/wastewater infrastructure. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand and has completed the Institute’s programme in Company Directorship.
Alan has delivered governance training programmes on behalf of the Institute and other professional organisations. He has developed and delivered governance training to local authorities, organisations in the health & disability, and education sectors, Maori and, not-for-profit organisations.
Alan has developed “best practice” guidelines for health providers, regional tourism organisations, economic development organisations, sporting bodies and not-for-profit bodies. He has developed processes for and facilitated reviews of board and members’ performance for companies (including Crown and council-controlled companies), and managing their relationship with their chief executive.
He was appointed by the Government to the Board of Transit New Zealand (a Crown Entity) in 1997 and became Chairman in 2000 until 2004. He has also served on the Board of Standards New Zealand and Pacific Health Ltd where he chaired the Audit Committee. He was appointed by the Government in 2005 to chair the inaugural Building Practitioners’ Board under the Building Act 2004.
Alan currently serves on the Board of three council-controlled organisations, Manukau Water Ltd, Manukau Building Consultants Ltd (Chairman) and Lakes Environmental Ltd.
